Science Vocabulary Activity for 5th Grade NGSS Science Topics

Teaching 5th grade NGSS science topics is a relatively new concept for many teachers. In order to make your life easier, I have started creating numerous resources that are grab-and-go, easy-to-print, and ready to engage your students in all things SCIENCE!!

These NGSS 5th Grade Vocabulary Matching Activities are the perfect way to learn and review science vocabulary terms that are associated with the NGSS science topics for 5th grade. Students are able to review independently, in a small group, at a station, or as the whole class. If you are looking for a quick review activity, this is it!

Science vocabulary activities for 5th grade are important for numerous reasons:

  • Students need repeated exposure to words to better retain their meaning.

  • Interacting with words on a daily basis helps students to develop a richer vocabulary.

  • Students can make associations and connections between words and other learning with more exposure to vocabulary terms.

  • The word building process is generally more exciting and engaging for students with a variety of activities.

Not all vocabulary activities need to be complex, and while I also have several activities that can allow students to think more critically, there is also a need for that basic repeated use of words. These matching activities are fun for all students to complete. There are many science vocabulary teaching strategies that I use in my classroom to both learn and review terms. I use these matching activities as a cut-and-paste activity, or have students practice matching the words with the definitions in class, and then send the words home in a baggy for students to practice again at home. They love to play games, so you can certainly make these vocabulary matching activities into a game for your students!

  1. Have a race to see who can get all the words matched the fastest. Or time students individually and have them try to beat their previous time!

  2. Pair students and have them shuffle and divide the cards with a partner. Then, they can try to match the cards they received to the definitions.

  3. Students can quiz each other by reading a definition seeing if a partner or small group member can remember the term.

There are 8 different units of vocabulary terms included. Some of the units also include two sets of vocabulary terms, an A and B matching game. The units include:

  • The Building Blocks of Matter

  • Mixtures and Solutions

  • Combining Matter

  • Gravity and Forces

  • Energy for Living Things

  • Patterns in the Sky

  • The Water Cycle and Landforms

  • Alternative Energy

There are also directions for the teacher and answer keys for each of the vocabulary matching activities. The answer keys can be provided to students who might miss a lesson or who need additional supports in matching the vocabulary terms and definitions.
